These  Tips will help you Prepare for Your Pet Sitter

How exciting your vacation is coming! We are delighted to take care of your sweet pets. These 4 tips will make our time with your animals all the better. We love taking care of your cats, dogs, bunnies, chickens & everything else you love and keep in your home.

1.) Let Us Know if Anything has Changed  with your Animals Since Our Last Visit- things might be different at home so please let us know via email, text message or our client system. Keep us up to date on how your sweet animals are doing. Maybe Fido is now getting less dinner? Kittens has a new litter what need to be tossed instead of scooped daily?

2.) Leave Us Treats!- Well not for us for your dog & cats so we can spoil them. We like to mimic the routine you have established with your adorable fur babies. Let us give them TLC while you are away!

3.) Don’t forget the Small Details- Do you have recently planted veggies you would like us to water? A toilet that doesn’t work? Trash or Recycling need to go out? All this information is collected in our client system but if you need any specific small details taken care of just let us know!

4.) Contact Us as Soon As You Know your Vacation/Work Trip dates!- We service our clients 365 days a year but it takes time to coordinate to make sure everyone gets the best quality attention. We understand sometimes you want a last minute weekend get away but if you know ahead of time please let us know.

Penny would like to say a special Happy Father’s Day Thank You Grandpa Matt for taking care of her while I was healing from her stitches. She knows she is old and needs extra attention these days so she appreciates you giving her TLC when she was recovering from her surgery.

She would also like to say Thank You Daddy Dennis for always feeding her, taking her to the river for long walks, letting her give you kisses and not being mad at her when she eats all your garden fresh strawberries.  They are just so delicious she can’t help herself! You have been a wonderful fur dad to her & Godiva. We love you!

We have scooped a lot of poop and we have our favorite Cat Litter to share with you!

If you just adopted a cat congratulations! We love cat sitting and spending time with your fur baby while your are away. We have scooped tons of cat poop lol It’s just what we do! Over the years we have scooped some horrible smelling poop, lavender scented poop, eco-friendly litter and everything other type of litter.

We love Arm & Hammer Double Duty Cat Litter!

This stuff is wonderful! When you scoop the lovely kitty presents it refreshes, it doesn’t fill the space with dust and it does a wonderful job at keeping odors down. It clumps really well and it is easy to pour out the of box. We have had cat litter (cheap stuff) that was so dusty it gave us a headache!

Each cat might have a different preference on what kind of litter they like best.

Types of Cat Litter/Things to Consider:

• What Material is it made from?    You can get clay, clumping, bio-degradable or crystal base litters.
• What does your cat like?
• Does it create Dust? We have had client who had very dusty litter which was not pleasant to work with at all.
• What fits best into your cat care style? Do you want to scoop often? Do you want to toss the entire thing and not deal with it? Are you worried about the environment ?
• What is your budget for litter? It is a big responsibility to have a cat. Litter is one of the things you will need to purchase if you have an cat.
• What Scent do you like? Lavender? Fresh Clean? All Cat Litters smell different so maybe one works great but you can’t stand the smell you might try a different type of cat litter.
• Do you want Flushable litter? (We won’t flush litter!) If you like flushable litter that is wonderful! We do not want to responsibility of your toilets not working because the “flushable” litter didn’t work. We will gladly scoop everyday, toss it in the trash and refresh the cat litter as needed. Once you return you can go back to flushing it : )

High 5’s a Jaguar, Climbs Mayan Temple, & Teaches Literacy in Belize

It was a hot humid evening and we were covered in dirt from building a sustainable garden at Chan Chen elementary. We quickly jumped into the peaceful blue bay for a refreshing swim before dinner.
It was hard work but the kindness of the children, community support and wildlife made it a trip of a lifetime.

I was blessed to be able to travel to Belize for a week long Service learning project with Boise State University. The opportunity to give back was truly amazing. I was one of two graduate students taking this course. The class was a cross-departmental collaborative effort with undergraduate students from Health Sciences, Engineering, Education and Honors.

We planned, coordinate and facilitated a three day camp at two elementary schools in Northern Belize teaching literacy, healthy lifestyles and physical activities. We put on a community fair with games, activities, skits, music and health education in the city square plaza. We observed animals in the wild and explored the beauty of the country.

I have always loves animals, conservation and service so this opportunity was perfect. My love for animals is what even motivated me to start our local pet sitting business.

We climbed to the top of an ancient Mayan Temple, saw Spider monkeys in the Wild and ate typical food. We created new friendship among the 22 students who embarked on this journey.

The highlight of the trip for me was being able to visit the Belize Zoo. Sharon Matola the protagonist of the book, The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw, gave us a private tour. Thirty years ago, Sharon was working on a film and when it wrapped she was told to deal with the left over animals from the shoot. Her story of conservation
and education started that day as she painted a sign and stuck it along the side of the road “Belize Zoo”.

Sharon is truly an inspiring person. She has taught the Belizeans people about animals in their own country which many of them have never seen before. Her passion for the animal along with dedication and patience has created “The Best Little Zoo in the World.” All the animals at the Zoo are native to the country and have arrived because they were problem animals.  Jaguars that were eating livestock, injured birds or neglected exotics now call the Zoo home.  The behavioral enrichment and care these animals receive on a daily basic is truly phenomenal.

It isn’t every day you get to high 5 a Jaguar!

Dog Treat Recipe Fido Will Love!

We are always looking for great dog treat recipes for our pups. They love just about anything we give them so making these homemade treats was fun.  You can find a lot of Dog Treat Recipes on our Pinterest Page so take a look, pin and share.

Recipe From King Arthur Flour

• 2 cups King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour or Premium Whole Wheat Flour
• 1 cup rolled oats, regular or quick  (Winco has a bulk item section and you can get an assortment of oats)
• 1/2 cup Baker’s Special Dry Milk or nonfat dry milk
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 large eggs (We used fresh eggs from our Chickens)
• 1 cup peanut butter, crunchy or plain
• 1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon cold water, enough to make a cohesive dough

Remember to just give them ONE as a treat! They are delicious and your pup will be begging for more.

How to Make this Dog Treat Recipe

1) Preheat the oven to 300°F. Lightly grease a couple of baking sheets, or line them with parchment.

2) Mix together the flour, oats, parsley, dried milk, and salt.

3) Add the eggs and peanut butter, stirring to combine; the mixture will be crumbly.

4) Add enough water to bring the dough together; depending on the season, you may need to add a bit more (winter), or a bit less (summer).

5) To make biscuits using a dog-bone cutter, roll the dough about 1/4″ thick, and cut with a 3 1/2″ cutter (or the size of your choice). Gather and re-roll the scraps, and continue to cut biscuits until you’ve used all the dough.

6) To make dog “cookies,” drop the dough in walnut-sized balls onto the prepared baking sheets. Flatten them to about 1/4″.  (We made the ones in the picture a bit thicker and next time we will make them thinner)

7) Bake the biscuits for about 40 to 60 minutes, baking the smaller cookies for a shorter amount of time. When finished, the biscuits will be dark golden brown, and will be dry and crisp all the way through.

8) Remove the biscuits from the oven, and cool right on the pans.

Yield: about 42 larger (3 1/2″ dog-bone) biscuits, 60 smaller (round) biscuits.

Our first batch of these treats we made them thicker then we realized we should have but they were enjoyed just the same.  Next time we make this dog treat recipe we will make them thinner as they are easier for doggies to eat.

Questions to Consider on How to Pick the Right Dog? 

You should ask yourself the following questions and keep in mind a dog is a long term commitment. Puppies are so cute and cuddly but they require a lot of attention, training and dedication just like a human child. You need to assess your lifestyle and think about what kind of dog would best fit you.

If your animal gets sick or requires a special or raw diet would you be willing to do that? Maybe your dog has stomach issues, allergies or is older and requires a special diet.

Do you work long hours? Puppies normally require to let out every 4 hours because they just can’t hold it longer. Maybe an older dog would be ideal if you are out of the home for longer periods of time.

Adoption for a local humane society is wonderful!

Do you have an active life style or do you like to relax on the sofa at home? Dog have different physical needs and personalities to consider in picking the right dog.

Can you afford the food, medical attention and licensing a dog requires? If you would not be able to pay for a veterinarian bill if your pup got sick or hurt you might need to reevaluate if you are ready to be a responsible pet owner.  Each city/state has different dog licensing regulations so make sure to do your research on what is needed in your area.

Boise City Animal Licensing Requires every dog to have a license. You can find the application here! The money from the dog licenses goes towards animal control officers. You must also be aware of laws with leash requirements in your area. If you don’t have your dog on a leash and with proper licensing you could get a citation in the City of Boise.

Do you have the space in your living arrangements for a dog? Do you have a large space for the dogs to run around? Are you in a smaller space where a smaller breed of dog might better fit? Some apartment complex or homes have breed restriction on the type of animal one can have while in the home.

German Shepherds, Pitt Bulls, Chows and Rottweilers are a few restricted dogs breeds which might cause a problem in finding living accommodations.

Do you plan on purchasing from a breeder, Humane Society or pet shop? 

Please do not purchase your dog at a Pet Store as it contributes to puppy mills. A good breeder will always take your animal back if your life situation change and you could not longer care for the animal. Do your research on your breeder and make sure you feel comfortable with the person before you give them money.

Adopting a dog from the local Humane Society is another great options. You can save the lives of animals who are facing being put to death. Save a life & Adopt a Rescue Animal!
